How to Fix a Slow or Dropped Remote Desktop Connection

Why a session feels slow or drops, and what to change: the network path, the picture quality, the window size, and how to send logs to support.

How to Fix a Slow or Dropped Remote Desktop Connection

A remote session is only as fast as the path between the two computers. Work through these in order; each one is something you can check or change yourself.

1. Check how the session connected

ScreenSharePRO connects the two computers directly, peer-to-peer, and uses a relay only when a direct path is blocked. A relayed session goes the long way round, so it can feel slower. Strict firewalls and some VPNs are the usual reason a direct path is blocked; trying the session without the VPN, or on another network, tells you quickly whether that's the cause.

2. Lower the picture quality for this session

On a slow link, a lighter picture beats a sharp one that stutters. You can set the picture quality for a single session from either viewer (it needs a desktop host). It applies to that session only and changes nothing the host has saved.

3. Use a smaller window

When both ends run the desktop app and your viewer window is clearly smaller than the host's screen, the stream is matched to your window size, which sends less data. Close to full size, you get the full-resolution stream.

4. Expect it to recover from a network change

If you switch Wi-Fi networks or connect to a VPN mid-session, the desktop app detects the change and reconnects by itself, so you don't have to start over. A brief network drop or server restart doesn't end the session either.

5. Still slow? Send us the logs

The desktop app can send its diagnostic logs to support, and writes per-session quality logs to disk. Send them from the app, then contact us with a short description of what you saw. The logs show exactly how the session connected and where it slowed down.
